Racism is… who?
Who is racist? Let’s face it. Everyone is — the only difference between people is how much racism there is in a particular person.
Defensive v. prejudicial racial profiling
People consciously or unconsciously profile everyone they encounter in a day’s activities. It is a self-protective measure, and the person profiled could be of the same or different race. Defensive profiling is different from prejudicial profiling because exercising caution is different from making unjust judgments.
It should be clear that at some level, like all organizations, Gibson’s Bakery must defensively profile every customer that comes through the door. There should be no surprise in this — it is survival in an imperfect world. Unfortunately, some people in Oberlin College don’t understand the difference between the two forms of profiling and see Gibson’s as practicing profiling prejudicially rather than defensively.
Oberlin’s Pavlovian dogs of racism
Unfortunately, Oberlin’s Pavlovian dogs of racism salivate and bark at every real or imagined instance of racism. These dogs often sound false alarms due to their inability to prioritize the seriousness of the situation. The dogs see destroying the Gibsons as having a higher priority than raising hell over a white cop killing an unarmed black girl in a routine traffic stop. Perhaps the girl offended the cop by mouthing off at him, but no rational police officer would kill someone only for that. The dogs do not understand that indiscriminately crying “wolf, wolf” only destroys the dogs’ credibility.
Black Lives Matter may have it figured out correctly
The Black Lives Matter organization was prominent in the demonstration after the Gibsons shoplifting incident. They seem to have disappeared, perhaps because the wiser heads in their leadership recognized that the accusations against the Gibsons were effectively bogus and that there were far higher priority racial issues on which to expend their energy. They must have sensed that the Gibsons issue was a dumb war to fight and could only blow up in their faces in the long run. See also Black Lives Matter 2020 — Traumatized By Antifa Treachery.

Please tell your fellow Obies how the Trustee-Politburo has damaged the Gibsons, the College’s reputation, the worth of our degrees, the college’s union workers, K-H, faculty independence, and the OSCA Co-op tradition. No sleazy PR can divert attention from the BOT’s negligence in these matters. Speak up and insist that the BOT arrest its compulsive, neo-Puritan righteousness, which has already eradicated THOUSANDS of $36,000 scholarships, a cooperating union, K-H, the OSCA Student Co-op, and hobbled a world class faculty — just to wreck a tiny bakery!
